How come, despite more than eleven hundred American citizens having been killed by our police in less than a year, we have seen no in-depth reporting on either A) the screening of police officers, both upon initial hiring and periodically, for attitudes and personalities that are incompatible with the duty of a police officer, and B) even more to the point, the training of our police today – as in what decision rules to abide by before resorting to deadly force, for example?
It almost has to be the case that the training that police are getting today has been encouraging, if not prescribing, much more ready firing of their weapons, as well as aiming with intent to kill.
On another front, how come we have seen virtually no investigative reporting, for over a decade in our Arab wars, on what countries and what manufacturing and distribution enterprises are equipping the Taliban, Al Qaeda and ISIS? American corporations are recently reported to have enjoyed a very prosperous year peddling their deadly wares. Where are those weapons and all that ammunition going? And by what channels of distribution, however shady? Who is being enriched by the sale of weapons to our mortal enemies?
How come no dots have been connected between the vicious practices of the Chicago Police Department, their mayor, Rahm Emanuel, and President Barack Obama, who is himself a product of the Chicago political machine and who recruited Rahm Emanuel to be his right-hand man as his chief-of staff? Recall here the Chicago Police Department’s Homan Square operation, so similar to the practices of South American dictators like Pinochet which accounted for thousands of desaparecidos?
Do you really think Obama can not have known about all that, when it is his former chief-of-staff and fellow Chicago operative that is mayor of Chicago?
While we’re on the subject of the governmental assault on our rights as citizens, how come Obama has escaped censure for the militarization of our local police forces during his tenure, their being equipped with military weaponry – and obviously the training needed to use it – for use against the people?
And how come Obama has also escaped public outrage over the government’s violation of our rights to privacy in our communications, when in accord with his policies, the biggest communications corporations have been recruited to turn over data on virtually all of our electronic communications, internet searches, etc. to functionaries of the Obama administration?
What other How Come? questions occur to you?
There has always been governmental – and corporate – malfeasance, of course, but in an earlier day we still had something in place that deserved recognition as the Fourth Estate – our newspapers, reporters, television and radio news and the investigative journalism that made them an essential component of the republic. How come we see so little investigative reporting on all those major threats listed above (excepting some liberal blogs, the New York Times and most notably the American edition of the British newspaper, The Guardian)?
How Come? will be a recurring feature on our Groundswell America blog. We look forward to following up on questions of this sort that occur to you. Please share your questions with us. We cannot defend our democracy and our freedom without requiring answers to such questions.
